Staging and Grading Periodontitis

From a 2017 Workshop presented by the American Academy of Periodontology and European Federation of Periodontology, a universal classification system for periodontitis involving staging and grading was developed.

Staging of periodontitis is based on the severity, complexity, extent and distribution of disease treatment. Grading refers to the rate of progression of the disease, responsiveness to standard therapy and potential impact on systemic health. Grading looks at factors such as rate of radiographic bone loss or clinical attachment loss, as well as lifestyle factors including smoking and diabetes.
