What is Kennedy’s Classification?

Kennedy’s Classifications

Kennedy’s Classification (1923) groups the patterns of partial edentulism.

Partial edentulism is when some of the teeth are missing.

Class I “Bilateral free end saddles”

Teeth are lost bilaterally, leaving natural teeth anterior to the area of loss.

Class II “Unilateral free end saddle”

Teeth are lost unilaterally, leaving natural teeth anterior to the area of loss.

Class III “Unilateral bounded saddle”

Teeth are lost unilaterally, leaving natural teeth anterior and posterior to the area of loss.

Class IV “single anterior bounded saddle”

Teeth are lost bilaterally, leaving natural teeth posterior to the area of loss.

Applegate’s Addition

Applegate’s Addition included further classes of edentulism.

Class V

Teeth are lost, leaving anterior and posterior teeth. However, the anterior teeth cannot be used as abutment.

Class VI

Teeth are lost, with the remaining teeth fully supporting the prosthesis.

Modifications

There may be modifications, or further spaces within natural teeth.

Modification I

There is one space within the natural teeth.

Modification II

There are two spaces within the natural teeth.
